WASHINGTON, DC --U.S. Representatives Adriano Espaillat (NY-13), Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), and Jimmy Panetta (CA-20) introduced the Working for Immigrant Safety and Empowerment (WISE) Act to protect immigrant survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking, and gender-based violence. The bill would ensure that immigrants have access to protections intended by the bipartisan Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), the Trafficking Victim Protection Act (TVPA), and other federal and state laws.

"Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III, was a beloved mentor, friend and pillar of our community, and the news of his passing is truly heartbreaking," said Rep. Espaillat.

"I extend my deepest condolences to the entire Butts family, the Abyssinian Baptist Church congregation, and everyone whose lives Rev. Butts touched through the ministry and in faith.

WASHINGTON, DC – In response to continued right-wing threats to New Yorkers’ personal liberties, Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) today voted to enshrine marriage equality into federal law. The Respect for Marriage Act will officially repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), a defunct and discriminatory statute excluding same-sex couples from marriage under federal law. This legislation will also codify new protections ensuring that no married couple can be denied protections and benefits under federal law based on sex, race, ethnicity, or national origin.
