Representative Adriano Espaillat Urges USPS to Improve Service in Washington Heights

November 30, 2021

NEW YORK, NY – Today, Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) sent a letter to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, head of the United States Postal Service (USPS), calling on the agency to immediately address reports of inadequate service at USPS facilities throughout Washington Heights.

The letter follows several reports from constituents detailing inadequate service, unscheduled and unannounced closures, and unprofessional conduct at the Washington Bridge Post Office on W. 181st Street and the Fort Washington Post Office on W. 158th Street.

"I am deeply concerned by the reports I have received from my constituents detailing an inability to purchase stamps, sending packages, and even of declining services to non-English speaking customers," said Rep. Espaillat in his letter. "The frequency and volume of complaints regarding deficient service warrant immediate intervention and attention.

"Not mending the current conditions at post office locations will leave thousands of Washington Heights residents without access to essential postal services as specified under federal law. While I am sympathetic to the unprecedented challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic has produced, including impacts to USPS staffing across the nation, I urge the USPS to act swiftly to intervene to maintain postal facilities ahead of the incoming holiday season. These services are essential and in some cases, even critical, to helping my constituents maintain their livelihoods as our community continues to recover.”
