Representative Adriano Espaillat, City Officials to Visit Rikers Island Amid Concerns

NEW YORK, NY Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) will lead a delegation of New York City and State officials during a visit to Rikers Island on Monday, November 29th at 10:00 a.m. (EST) to assess current conditions amid ongoing reports of fatalities and humanitarian concerns at the facility.

During the visit, Rep. Espaillat and officials will meet with administrators and tour the Rikers intake center, medical clinic and mental observation unit, the young adult cell unit, and PEACE (Program, Education and Community Engagement) Center, which was established to help young inmates develop various skills through workforce and educational programs to prepare them with the tools needed to transition and obtain jobs once they are released.

According to New York City Open Data, there are currently more than 5,300 incarcerated individuals being held in custody, including more than 1,100 jailed for misdemeanors and non-violent felony accusations.
