REP. ADRIANO ESPAILLAT LEADS NEW YORK CITY CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION TO REBUKE HUD RENT HIKE FOR LOW INCOME HOUSEHOLDS

May 3, 2018

WASHINGTON, D.C.Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) leads the Democratic Members of the New York City congressional delegation in a letter in opposition to the newly released "Making Affordable Housing Work Act" by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Secretary Ben Carson.

"Raising the monthly rent on low-income households will have a devastating impact on the livelihood and well-being of some of our most vulnerable residents across the five New York City boroughs," said Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13). "A rent hike of 35 percent of an individual's unadjusted monthly income is irresponsible and cruel. As elected officials, we have a responsibility and a duty to ensure such financial burdens are not implemented, and especially for those constituents who are already struggling to make ends meet each month."

"NYCHA thanks New York City's congressional delegation for opposing this irresponsible attempt to burden tens of thousands of low-income New Yorkers with an unjust rent hike. This senseless proposal would devastate New York City by making it harder for vulnerable New Yorkers to pay their rent and by shifting responsibility for what has always been a federally subsidized program onto the very people who can least afford it," said Stanley Brezenoff, Interim Chair and CEO of the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA).

"Housing is a basic human necessity – the key to security, stability, and opportunity for each and every one of us. HUD rental assistance programs help provide that for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers. The proposed attempts to gut the social safety net and burden some of our most vulnerable neighbors with higher rents and unproven work requirements would be a disaster here and across the country," said NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) Commissioner Maria Torres-Springer. "We thank the NYC Congressional Delegation for standing up against this proposal."

CONGRESISTA ADRIANO ESPAILLAT LIDERA DELEGACIÓN CONGRESUAL DE LA CIUDAD DE NUEVA YORK EN OPOSICIÓN AL ALZA DE ALQUILER DE HUD PARA HOGARES DE BAJO INGRESO

WASHINGTON, D.C.
