Ranking Member Adriano Espaillat Statement on Republicans' Laddered Continuing Resolution

November 13, 2023

Extreme MAGA Republicans are charging toward a shutdown that will hurt working families

NEW YORK, NY – Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13), Ranking Member of the Legislative Branch Subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee, issued the follow statement on the House Republicans' laddered continuing resolution.

“This year has been plagued with the Republicans’ repeated inaction to pass any legislation or fund the government, and instead they have spent the past several months fighting each other and causing chaos and confusion in Congress,” said Espaillat. “This laddered CR continues the MAGA radical agenda that Republicans have become known for and continues to hurt hard working American families.

“With just four days until government funding expires, extreme MAGA Republicans are cheering on a government shutdown that will wreak havoc on our economy, increase costs on working families, and make our nation less safe. For months, extreme MAGA Republicans have been demanding cruel cuts to investments working families count on while pushing a radical plan to slash Social Security and Medicare. Some are even openly admitting they will shut down the government if they don’t get their way. With this latest government funding deadline looming, MAGA Republicans are continuing to play political games and threaten to wreak havoc on our economy by shutting down the government,” Espaillat continued

“While we are facing global security crises, Republicans have put forth a funding package that fails to support our allies or protect our national security interests as they continue to bolster their billionaire backers and attack our fundamental freedoms. The American people deserve better than more chaos and confusion. They deserve a government that is fully funded and works on their behalf,” he concluded

The Republican proposal would extend funding for military construction, veterans benefits, transportation, housing, urban development, agriculture, the Food and Drug Administration and energy and water programs through January 19. Funding for all other federal operations would expire on February 2. This doubles the number of shutdown crises the Government faces and gives Republicans more opportunities to hold the process hostage in exchange for keeping government open. It also puts bills in the second tranche at risk of not being enacted.
