Impact of Donald Trump's Shutdown of the U.S. Government

October 7, 2025

On October 1, 2025, the federal government shut down because Donald Trump and Republicans would not agree to legislation that kept government open while lowering health care costs.

A government shutdown means that thousands of federal workers in New York and across the country have been furloughed, our beautiful National Parks have been forced to close to visitors, and our troops and federal law enforcement are working without pay.

That is unacceptable.

I’ve been in Washington, ready to work on a bipartisan solution to reopen the government, but Speaker Mike Johnson has not called the House back for votes, meaning the House cannot vote to end the shutdown.

Do you think Republicans should work with Democrats to reopen the government and lower health care costs?
