CONGRESSMAN ADRIANO ESPAILLAT STATEMENT ON RAMADAN

May 26, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today CongressmanAdriano Espaillat (NY-13) issued the following statement in recognition of the Holy Month of Ramadan.

"With the dawning of a new moon, Muslims across the United States and throughout the world bid farewell to the month of Sha'baan and embrace the Holy Month of Ramadan. This Holy Month is not static in its arrival, but always offers a time to recalibrate the moral and spiritual center. Muslims across the world come together as a community – a united ummah – to celebrate this month of personal sacrifice, introspection, and generosity.

"While there are overt signs and symbols we can identify as Muslim, we often do not realize that there is a large and growing population of Muslims who are our peers, our neighbors, public servants, and members of the Armed Services. What binds all of us, regardless of religion, is a dedication to making our communities more diverse and vibrant.

"As this Holy Month of Ramadan begins, we continue our efforts to ensure the United States remains resilient in its preservation of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all. If we exclude and discriminate against Islam or any other religion, we fail. When we come together to recognize and celebrate all communities, including our Muslim community – then, and only then – can we be one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. May this Holy Month of Ramadan bring peace and wisdom. Ramadan Mubarak."
