Congressman Adriano Espaillat Recognizes National Caribbean American Heritage Month
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) issued the following statement in recognition of National Caribbean American Heritage Month.
“June 2017 marks the eighth-annual celebration recognizing National Caribbean American Heritage Month. During the month, we recognize the significance of Caribbean Americans throughout American history and reflect on the numerous contributions they have made in New York’s 13th Congressional District and throughout this nation,” said Rep. Espaillat.
“The culture of the Caribbean diaspora is rich and diverse, but still faces many obstacles. Having come to the United States as an immigrant and at a young age, I experienced firsthand the challenges that this community faces, from discrimination in housing and employment to immigration policies that continue still today. As the first Dominican-American to serve in Congress and member of the Congressional Caribbean Caucus, I am proud to recognize Caribbean American heritage and dedicate my work to ensuring diversity and inclusion continue to thrive within New York’s 13th Congressional District and in communities throughout the country.”
