In Support Of The First Amendment, Congress Has A Duty To Uphold The Freedom Of The Press And Oppose Fake News And Alternative Facts

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Congressman Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) issued the following statement detailing his resolution to stand in support of the First Amendment of the Constitution to uphold the freedom of the press, and oppose fake news and alternative facts:

“President Trump’s claims of fake news are outrageous, and I introduced this resolution to oppose the fake news and alternative facts that we have witnessed during the President’s consistent lack of transparency during his first 50 days in office,” said Rep. Espaillat.  “The United States has historically and proudly enjoyed freedom of the press, and spokespersons for the Trump Administration who offer ‘alternative’ or inaccurate facts should retract their statements immediately.

“This is America where we enjoy freedom of the press.  Real news should not be dismissed as fake simply because the White House disagrees, and I call on Congress to oppose the ‘fake news and alternative facts’ issued by the President and White House spokespersons in support of the First Amendment, freedom of speech and of the press.”

H. RES 191 is co-sponsored by John Lewis (GA-05), Barbara Lee (CA-13), and Ted Lieu (CA-33).
