Advisory: Representative Adriano Espaillat, NYC Council Member Shaun Abreu Hold Press Conference to Address Gun Violence Epidemic

NEW YORK, NY – Today, June 3rd is National Gun Violence Awareness Day and Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13), in collaboration with New York City Council Member Shaun Abreu, will hold a press conference starting at 4:00 p.m. EDT at Brotherhood Sister Sol located at 512 West 143rd Street (Amsterdam Avenue), to honor the victims and survivors of gun violence and urge immediate policy action at the city, state and federal levels to address the gun violence epidemic in New York City and communities around the nation.

Beginning at 3:00 p.m., the elected officials and community leaders will walk from PS 153 to Brotherhood Sister Sol location.

"Every day in the United States, more than 110 people are killed from guns and hundreds more are wounded," said Rep. Espaillat. "The tragic shootings that occur every day in New York City are unimaginable and have devastated far too many families in their wake. During National Gun Violence Awareness Month, we are standing united to bring attention to the urgency around our fight for gun reform and to call for immediate action at every level of our city, state, and federal governments to prevent these senseless tragedies from tearing even more families apart."

“Every part of Upper Manhattan has been touched by gun violence. You can get your hair cut, walk your dog, grab dinner, or drop your kid off at school, and be reminded of a neighbor who has lost their life to gun violence there,” said Council Member Shaun Abreu. “Gun violence is not an abstract concept for us. It especially targets our youth, infiltrating schools and ending lives far too early. Today, during National Gun Violence Awareness Month, elected officials, community leaders, and advocacy groups are marching together to call for immediate action. As chair of the Council’s State and Federal Legislation Committee, I look forward to taking action over the next month to stop the flood of lethal weapons into our community. We look forward to working with Congressman Espaillat and partners at all levels to get this done.”
