Representative Adriano Espaillat Recognizes Immigrant Workers on May Day

May 1, 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) issued the following statement to recognize immigrant workers on May Day.

"This is a critical time for our country, and the Trump administration must do a better job than the reckless behavior and hazardous policies targeting the Latino community and fueling his base. As a result of the administration's efforts to deny protections for Dreamers, end Temporary Protected Status, raid immigrant-heavy workplaces, separate immigrant families, and deny asylum to refugees, we are now witnessing a significant shift in Americans' view of their own government and our nation's standing abroad with our allies. These policies are unaligned with the values that we hold dear.

"Having come to this country as an immigrant myself, I take the Trump administration's anti-immigrant policies personally. When my constituents inform me that they are afraid to go to work or drop off their child at school – that's personal. When the administration dedicates the resources of an entire agency for the sole purpose of demonizing immigrants – that's personal. When families are torn apart and when students are uprooted from the only place they have ever called home – that's personal, too.

"Immigrants from around the world call America home. Immigrant workers help boost our national economy and have worked hard for generations to make this nation what it is today – a beacon of hope and prosperity. As we celebrate May Day as a day to support and promote labor and worker's rights, let's take a stand to protect the liberties of freedom and opportunities that we hold dear as a country and renew our fight against attacks on immigrant workers and families in communities around the nation."
