Representative Adriano Espaillat Praises Governor Cuomo’s Commitment to Preserving the Dominican Diaspora’s Constitutional Voting Rights

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) released the following statement in association to a letter the office of the New York Governor Andrew Cuomo sent to the Dominican Republic's Consul General in New York Carlos Castillo, in which the Cuomo Administration reemphasized its longstanding commitment to democratic rights and reiterated that New York State fully intends to allow the Dominican diaspora vote to be safely administered for the country's July 5th presidential election.
"There are more than 250,000 Dominicans living in New York, a significant and growing segment of the state's population and electorate which is known for its remarkable patriotism, vibrance, and prepotent political importance." said Rep. Espaillat. "Throughout the Dominican community, there is always an elevated sense of civic duty and engagement during American and Dominican election years – but the enthusiasm and attention lent to the 2020 election cycle is unprecedented and palpable.
"The Cuomo Administration's commitment to preserving tens of thousands of Dominican-American's constitutionally protected to right to vote in New York during the Caribbean country's July 5, 2020, presidential and congressional elections is yet another illustration of the importance of sound leadership, protecting democratic rights, and the diaspora's independent voice in the upcoming election both in the United States and the Dominican Republic."
