REPRESENTATIVE ADRIANO ESPAILLAT LAUNCHES NEW VIDEO OF EFFORTS TO REUNITE IMMIGRANT FAMILIES

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) launched a new video highlighting his efforts to reunite immigrant children and families separated under the Trump Administration's ‘zero tolerance' policy. Watch and share the video below.

"The separation of immigrant children from their families is a violation of basic human rights and a betrayal of the ideals we hold dear as a nation," said Rep. Espaillat. Since day one of this horrific policy, Rep. Espaillat has spoken out against the Trump Administration and has worked consistently to reunite children with their parents including with the recent introduction of his bill, the Reunite Every Unaccompanied Newborn Infant Toddler and Other Children Expeditiously (REUNITE) Act, which would support current litigation and require the immediate reunification of children who remain separated from their parents or legal guardians following the Trump Administration's "zero-tolerance" policy.

"My efforts are a moral response to the Trump administration's inhumane treatment of children and attack on immigrant families. No matter your political affiliation or opinion about immigration policy, we can all agree that families must remain intact and our efforts should be focused on protecting children, regardless of their status. Period. This is not about politics, this is about decency and humanity," he concluded.

In addition to the REUNITE Act, to date, Rep. Espaillat has cosponsored the Keep Families Together Act, which promotes family unity by prohibiting Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials from separating children from their parents, except in extraordinary circumstances; and, joined Reps. Eliot Engel (NY-16) and Norma Torres (CA-35) to introduce the Central America Family Protection and Reunification Act that would ensure the coordination between the U.S. State Department – through our embassies in El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala – to help individuals locate children who have been separated from their families under President Trump's zero tolerance policy.

Rep. Adriano Espaillat has been the only elected official actively engaged with the Cayuga Center to help reunite separated families, including immigrant mothers Yeni Gonzalez and Rosayra Cruz, who were successfully reunited with their children last month. The Congressman continues his work with on behalf of the constituents of New York's 13^th congressional district and vulnerable immigrant families under attack by the policies being put forth by the Trump administration.
