Calls on New York State to Begin Issuing Driver’s Licenses to All Residents Regardless of Immigration Status

NEW YORK, NY – In a letter to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, New York State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, and New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) expressed his enthusiastic support for a measure that would allow New York State to issue driver's licenses to individuals irrespective of their immigration status and calls on New York to take this important step to begin issuing driver's licenses to all residents regardless of immigration status.

"During my time in the New York State Senate, I sponsored legislation and was a proud champion of the push calling for driver's licenses for all residents regardless of immigration status," said Rep. Espaillat (NY-13). "I am proud to see that progress has been made to ensure all New Yorkers are tested, trained, licensed and insured while traveling throughout the City. Driver's licenses for undocumented New Yorkers benefits each of us and increases the safety for all.

"New York has an opportunity to make this critical change legislatively, joining a dozen other states, as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. I strongly believe such a change would result in important benefits not only for undocumented residents, but for all New Yorkers," he continued.

"Rep. Espaillat knows personally what so many of our immigrant members know: in much of New York, driving is a necessity, not a luxury," said Javier H. Valdés, Co-Executive Director of Make the Road New York. "It's time for New York to restore access to driver's licenses for all qualified drivers and take a critical step for keeping families together, improving road safety, and boosting the economy."

Make the Road New York.
