Republicans’ Tax Bill and Trump’s Executive Actions Increasing New York Premiums By Nearly 9%

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) highlighted the nonpartisan Urban Institute’s new analysis of the GOP’s health care actions. The study indicates that the combination of the Tax Scam and the Republican’s new scheme to sell incomplete junk coverage plans will spike New Yorkers’ premiums by 8.8 percent in 2019. “We must work on a bipartisan solution to strengthen and improve on the Affordable Care Act and lower families’ healthcare costs,” said Rep. Espaillat. “Instead, Republicans’ cynical assault on Americans’ health care is needlessly driving up premiums for families across New York. Republicans are awarding massive tax breaks to their wealthy donors while making it more difficult for New York families to provide health coverage for their households.”

According to the Urban Institute, healthcare premiums will skyrocket due to the repeal of the individual mandate and the expansion of short-term plans that do not cover either pre-existing conditions or essential health benefits. Nationwide, Republicans’ actions are increasing premiums by an average of more than 16 percent, including 18 percent in the 43 states that do not prohibit or limit junk coverage plans.
