Rep. Adriano Espaillat Continues Calls to Disavow Political Assault on New York Following Global Entry Ban

February 20, 2020

NEW YORK, NYRep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) issued the following statement to reiterate his opposition to the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) decision to implement a new policy banning New York State residents from the Global Entry Program and other Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP).

"Similar to Trump's and Republican's harmful plan to reduce state and local tax deductions, the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) decision to implement its new policy banning New York State residents from the Global Entry Program and other Trusted Traveler Programs is simply another misguided policy aimed at hurting New Yorkers," said Rep. Espaillat. "We continue our calls to disavow this political assault and abuse of power and retaliatory actions by President Donald Trump and his administration that directly impacts New Yorkers. Not only is the policy an inconvenience for travelers but it places an undue burden on businesses in our state that benefit from the Trusted Travelers Program (TTP)."

Last week, Rep. Espaillat joined a bipartisan congressional delegation to send a letter to DHS Acting Secretary Chad Wolf questioning the decision as well as how information was reported. "You failed to provide any notice to our congressional delegation about your decision. Rather, we learned through reporting that a letter was sent to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) alerting them of this policy change, which will immediately impact roughly 50,000 to 80,000 New York State residents with applications pending and another 150,000 to 200,000 New York State residents per year, who are trying to renew membership. This is of great concern and unacceptable to many of our constituents," the lawmakers wrote in their letter.

Read the full congressional delegation letter calling on DHS Acting Secretary Wolf to rethink the ban and to consider the policy's impact on New Yorker residents and travelers.
