Rep. Espaillat discusses House speaker vote

October 5, 2023

New York Rep. Adriano Espaillat joined “News All Day” to talk about the vote to oust Rep. Kevin McCarthy as speaker of the House, as well as the migrant crisis. Espaillat says that Democrats voted against McCarthy because "he has launched an assault against women and their right to choose."

He also mentioned budget cuts that McCarthy implemented, which included restricting the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

"These critical programs that are so important for the people that I represent, he cut them to the bone," Espaillat said.

Espaillat also spoke about the influx of migrants arriving in the city, saying the border should not be closed. He said he is open to finding better solutions.

"I know that there are some measures that must be taken at the border. I'm not blind to that. And I don't object to having a robust discussion as to what that should be. But building a wall is not the answer," Espaillat said.

Espaillat added that he does agree with Mayor Eric Adams saying that the city needs more money to accommodate the influx of migrants.
