Rep. Adriano Espaillat Recognizes 176th Anniversary of the Dominican Republic's Independence

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) issued the following statement to commemorate the 176th anniversary of the Independence of the Dominican Republic:

"Today is February 27th and we celebrate the 176th anniversary of Independence of the Dominican Republic, which gain its independence in 1844 from the Republic of Haiti. Led by Juan Pablo Duarte, Sanchez and Mella, this island nation moved forward under great adversity. Throughout its 176 years, it has endured military occupation, dictatorships and other strong and determining challenges, but throughout these many decades, the nation has prevailed.

"Today we enjoy the presence of over two million Dominicans in the United States many of them in New York States and many of them in the 13th Congressional District, particularly in Washington Heights, where we see many streets in the neighborhood named after some of the patriarchs of the nation – Juan Pablo Duarte Boulevard, Manolo Tavares Justo Way, Mateo Rojas Alou Street, Miguel Amaro Street, and Freddy Beras-Goico Street.

"There are schools named after prominent Dominicans such as the Salomé Ureña School, the Mirabal Sisters School, Juan Pablo Duarte School, and the Juan Bosch School to name a few. In our community, my district, there are social and cultural institutions like the Club Deportivo Dominicano and numerous bodega owners, supermarket owners, hair salons and other small businesses that are characteristic of our people's resolve to create better lives for themselves and their families.

"We sent remittances back home becoming the first and most important column of the Dominican economy, and we continue to contribute in many ways to the island nation while strengthening the relation between the United States of America.

"Last weekend, we witnessed an unprecedented event where young people convened in Washington Heights to protest the failure of the board of elections to ensure a fair and transparent process. In the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, which I am honored to represent in Congress, we witnessed thousands of young people speak out in opposition to the suspension of the elections in the Dominican Republic on February 16th.

"Tais Garcia Heredia, Emely Curiel, Andres Gonzalez del Rey, Candido Santana, Alberto Valentin and Albelis Reyes and others, particularly a young man by the name of Felipe Batista, who led thousands of young people throughout Washington Heights. Their initiative to fight for the people of the Dominican Republic will go down in history. You may not be able to find them in a Wikipedia page in the future or able Google their names, but their names will be echoed in the congressional record and their patriotism will forever be remembered.

"These young people are fighting to strengthen democracy, they're fighting to strengthen their best values of any democratic system and process, and I'm delighted to support them and share with the world that we're very proud of them for their efforts.

A lo largo de sus 176 años, ha soportado la ocupación militar, las dictaduras y otros desafíos fuertes y determinantes, pero a lo largo de estas décadas, la nación ha prevalecido.

"Hoy disfrutamos de la presencia de más de dos millones de dominicanos en los Estados Unidos, muchos de ellos en el Estado de Nueva York y muchos de ellos en el Distrito Congresual 13, particularmente en Washington Heights, donde vemos muchas calles en el vecindario que llevan el nombre de algunas de las personalidades de la nación: Juan Pablo Duarte Boulevard, Manolo Tavares Justo Way, Mateo Rojas Alou Street, Miguel Amaro Street, y Freddy Beras-Goico Street.

"Enviamos remesas a casa convirtiéndonos en la primera y más importante columna de la economía dominicana, y seguimos contribuyendo de muchas maneras a la nación isleña mientras fortalecemos la relación con los Estados Unidos de América.

"El fin de semana pasado, fuimos testigos de un evento sin precedentes en el que los jóvenes se reunieron en Washington Heights para protestar por las fallidas elecciones municipales en su país. En el vecindario de Washington Heights, en Manhattan, el cual me siento honrado de representar en el Congreso, fuimos testigos de cómo miles de jóvenes se manifestaron en oposición al fracaso más reciente de la Junta Central Electoral en celebrar adecuadamente las elecciones municipales del país el 16 de febrero.

"Tais García Heredia, Emely Curiel, Andrés González del Rey, Cándido Santana, Alberto Valentín, Albelis Reyes y otros, particularmente un joven llamado Felipe Batista, quien encabezó a miles de jóvenes en todo Washington Heights. Su iniciativa de luchar por el pueblo de la República Dominicana pasará a la historia.
