“I don’t think this is a major issue that’s divided on partisan policy,” says Espaillat. “I think everybody would understand this clearly that recycling e-waste responsibly is good for the environment and good for homeland security.” This is not the first Congressional session in which similar bills have been introduced and allowed to die like a first grade classroom goldfish on summer break. Why is it so tough to pass e-waste legislation? “Awareness is definitely a major challenge,” explains Espaillat. “When I speak to some members, they don’t have the slightest idea what this is about.” Education of politicians and citizens is also key, adds Espaillat. Yet recycling struggles to be a ratings grabber. “Waste management is not a sexy issue to talk about on the seven o’clock news,” he says. “But as more reports come out, I think it’s going to become more of a common sense issue for members of Congress.”

The assignment will arrive via the Government Legal Assistance for Victims (LAV) program in Washington, DC.

WASHINGTON — Situated in the woods of North Carolina, the Army base of Fort Bragg is home to some of the most storied units in the American military, including the 82nd Airborne Division and elite special operations units such as Delta Force. With some 40,000 residents living on 19 square miles, it is the largest military installation in the world. Fort Bragg also happens to be named for a pro-slavery Confederate officer, Braxton Bragg. A slave owner who fought for the South in the Civil War, Bragg rose to the position of general and commanded the Army of Tennessee. An infamously poor tactician, he has been called “the most hated man of the Confederacy.” Despite that, his name graces one of the most prominent military installations in the United States. Nor is Bragg alone. Nine other military bases are named after Confederate figures, including Fort Hood in Texas. And those are part of a greater network of some 1,500 symbols commemorating the Confederacy across the country.

Yesterday, Representative Adriano Espaillat (D-Washington Heights, Sugar Hill) announced the formation of the Friends of the Dominican Republic Caucus. The caucus kicked off in Washington D.C., with a reception on Capitol Hill. Espaillat made the announcement alongside several of his House colleagues and caucus members, and special guests, including the Honorable Jose Tomas Perez, Ambassador of the Dominican Republic to the United States. “With our growing population and representation across the United States, it remains vital that Dominican-Americans and individuals of Dominican descent have an opportunity to let their voices be heard on the issues and concerns facing their communities around the nation,” said Espaillat. “As a proud member of the Dominican American community and the first Dominican American elected to Congress, starting the Friends of the Dominican Republic Caucus was an honor and I’m appreciative to all who attended yesterday evening launch in Washington.”

Earlier today (July 17), a press conference took place during which Black Caucus Rep. Adriano Espaillat and his caucus called for A$AP Rocky to be released from prison in Sweden. Espaillat also asked for Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to get involved. He says he’s been in touch with the Sweedish Embassy, which he claims is refusing to interfere on the Harlem rapper’s behalf. Espaillat, who represents Rocky’s home district, believes race was a factor in A$AP’s detention. “Sweden is going to walk out of this with a black eye,” he said during the Wednesday press conference. “They are a country that proposes to the rest of the world that they are a mecca — a haven of democracy and niceties.”
