NEW YORK, NY – As New York City begins Phase 1 reopening to rebuild in the aftermath of the coronavirus, Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) continues his efforts throughout the district in support of families and businesses affected by the pandemic. Last week, Rep. Espaillat, in collaboration with local community leaders, celebrated Mother's Day by distributing grocery boxes to single parent households at NYCHA General Grant Houses. This event was part of a series of continued efforts in support of families in the district.
"Communities around the nation continue to face ongoing challenges due to the coronavirus, and many households continue to adjust to the new norms of juggling professional, family and childcare responsibilities. According to a recent poll by Morning Consult/New York Times, 80 percent of mothers felt the brunt of the work while homeschooling, parenting and working during the COVID-19 lockdown. This feat was particularly felt within single parent households and even more so within vulnerable communities," said Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13). "Our collaborative efforts to support single mothers at NYCHA General Grant Houses is part of the ongoing work to ensure support and unity as communities rebuild in response to this crisis. When mothers are strong, children thrive, and communities succeed."
"Mothers are the glue that binds our community together. They are kind, loving, and strong. Although this pandemic has made these times particularly challenging, it has especially made their work that much more important and for this, I say thank you. I am humbled and honored to be able to show mothers gratitude by celebrating Mother's Day with these grocery boxes. I hope it will put a smile on the faces of a community dear to me, the General Grant Houses in Harlem, and show mothers that the love that they have for their children radiates beyond their homes and that their children determine the future of our great city," said Ameera Amir, Adjunct Professor, Columbia University and social entrepreneur. "I am thrilled to collaborate with Congressman Adriano Espaillat again for the second event of this series. His dedication to serving the people of his congressional district is truly admirable. I also wish to extend a special thank you to Cesar Ramirez, owner of C-Town on 125th street; Greyston Bakery; the Tenant Association of General Grant Houses; and to each of the volunteers for their collaborative efforts to make a positive impact in New York City by helping to make this effort possible. Thank you - we are stronger when we work together."
